Three GSDM Faculty Members Promoted to New Positions

Three GSDM faculty members—Dr. Stephen DuLong, Dr. Magnolia Venegas, and Dr. Hussam Batal—received academic promotions in their respective departments. Dr. DuLong is in the Department of General Dentistry, Dr. Venegas is in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, and Dr. Batal is in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Stephen DuLong

Dr. Stephen DuLong has been promoted from Associate Professor to Clinical Professor in the Department of General Dentistry.

Dr. DuLong was awarded a DMD in 1975 from GSDM and later earned a CAGS in Prosthodontics, also from GSDM. He subsequently joined the School’s faculty in 1978 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry and in 1988 was promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics Sciences. In 1988, he was also appointed as Director of Pre-doctoral Fixed Prosthetic Dentistry, teaching pre-clinical removable prosthodontics, fixed prosthodontics and occlusion to pre-doctoral students. In 1997, Dr. DuLong was appointed Assistant Dean for Clinical Services and later to Associate Dean for Clinical Services in 2001. He held this position until 2013 when he joined the Department of General Dentistry to focus on pre-clinical teaching.

Dr. DuLong has made significant contributions to the dental profession through his professional collaborations outside of GSDM. He currently serves as Chair of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry (BORID). He also holds memberships on the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA), the American Association of Dental Boards (AADB), the American Board of Dental Examiners (District 10 Representative), the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) and the American Dental Association (ADA). Dr. DuLong became a Fellow in the American College of Dentists in 2011 and is a recipient of GSDM’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Dr. Magnolia Venegas

Dr. Magnolia Venegas has been promoted from Clinical Assistant Professor to Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Venegas joined the GSDM faculty in 1987 as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. She was subsequently promoted to Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatric Dentistry in 1989. Dr. Venegas earned a DDS from Federal University of Bahia (UFRJ) in Salvador, Brazil, in 1979, subsequently completing a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Pediatric Dentistry, also from UFRJ, in 1981. In 1985, she earned a CAGS in Pediatric Dentistry from GSDM. Dr. Venegas completed the Master of Science program in Pediatric Dentistry at GSDM in 1986, and was awarded a DMD from the School’s Advanced Standing Program in 1991. In 1997, she became a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Venegas was appointed Director of the Post-doctoral Pediatric Dentistry Patient Center at Boston Medical Center (BMC) in 2013 where she oversees complex pediatric cases in the operating room. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Massachusetts Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and has served as an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

 

Dr. Hussam Batal has been promoted from Assistant Professor to Clinical Associate Professor of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Batal earned a DMD degree from GSDM in 1998 and subsequently completed an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Internship (1999) and CAGS in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (2003), both at GSDM. Since July 2003, Dr. Batal has served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He was appointed as Director of the Preliminary Internship Program in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery from 2003-2012, and has served as Director of Clinical Services in the Department of Dentistry and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Boston Medical Center since 2010.

Dr. Batal presents nationally and internationally at professional meetings and scientific conferences. He holds membership in numerous professional organizations including the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), the American Dental Association (ADA), the Massachusetts Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, (MSOMS), the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS), and the Metropolitan District Dental Society (MDDS). He is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
