A total of 10 Members of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) community volunteered at the 30th Annual Charles C. Yancey Book Fair on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on Tremont Street.

The Annual Book Fair, which offers free books and entertainment for children, took place from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2016. It is named after former Boston City Councilor Mr. Charles C. Yancey, who served on the Boston City Council from 1983 to 2015.

Mr. Yancey and his wife, Ms. Marzetta Yancey, founded the Charles C. Yancey Book Fair in 1987 and have since distributed more than 450,000 books to more than 18,000 children in the city of Boston.

The 10 GSDM volunteers consisted of six DMD students, two AS students, and two faculty members. While the volunteers from GSDM did not distribute books, they did serve a valuable role at the book fair. The GSDM volunteers assisted the Masonic Youth Child Identification Program (MYCHIP) in obtaining “tooth prints” from children, while also promoting good oral health at a dental resource table.

The GSDM volunteers also set up a general dental resource table in an effort to promote positive oral health practices to the families attending the fair.

“At the Charles C. Yancey Book Fair, GSDM volunteers gained valuable experience promoting oral health in the local community, while also working to improve the MYCHIP program,” said Ms. Kathy Lituri, Clinical Instructor in the Department of Health Policy & Health Services Research and Oral Health Promotion Director. “I would like to thank all the volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer.”

Dean Hutter remarked, “I am very proud of the GSDM community members who volunteered to assist with the MYCHIP program at the 30th Annual Charles C. Yancey Book Fair.”
