ADSO’s First Meeting Looks Ahead to New Challenges and Projects

Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine’s (GSDM) Asian Dental Student Organization (ADSO) chapter held its first meeting on Friday, August 16, 2013.

The mission of the ADSO is to promote collegiality and collaboration among dental students of Asian heritage. As future health care leaders, the members of ADSO dedicated to promoting Asian culture within the dental profession. Through volunteer work and group events, they strive to make a positive impact in their local communities while embracing diversity and cultural learning.

Around 50 students attended the meeting. Among the discussion topics were the upcoming elections (which were held on Thursday, August 22, 2013); the new “open forum” structure of the organization, which was implemented to increase member participation and encourage new ideas; upcoming community service projects, including the Wang YMCA holiday party and Tet in Boston New Year Festival in Dorchester; and potential collaborations with ADSO chapters at Harvard University School of Dental Medicine and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

ADSO President Derek Leung is looking forward to launching this year’s projects and initiatives. “Though ADSO’s membership has risen significantly since last year, our commitment to excellence and community service efforts will continue to flourish,” said Derek. “ADSO will gain even more momentum over the course of this upcoming year.”

“Student organizations such as ADSO provide an important opportunity for students to learn to work together to give back to the community,” said Dean Hutter. “We at GSDM are thrilled to welcome back ADSO and I know both the Dean’s Office and Student Affairs look forward to working with ADSO in the coming year and providing the resources needed for the group to succeed.”
