On May 16, 2013, Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter hosted a recognition lunch to honor the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) students who participated in the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) Annual Session, ASDA National Lobby Day, and American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Annual Session.

Over lunch, the student participants presented to Dean Hutter and discussed their experiences at each event.

Representatives for the ADEA Council of Students, Residents and Fellows (CoSRF), Arsalan Elahi DMD 14, Kelsey Hill DMD 14, Emma Lattouf DMD 15, and Andrew Soule-Hines DMD 15 talked about their experience at education sessions with other dental school CoSRF representatives at the March 2013 ADEA Annual Session in Seattle, Washington. The representatives presented an overview of the current dental education landscape and discussed ways in which the landscape would be changing in the coming years.

At the ADEA Annual Session, the students were impressed by how many times they found themselves using their experiences at GSDM as positive examples by saying, “Well, the way we do it at BU is…” They said that they walked away from the meeting feeling proud to be BU students.

ADEA BU Chapter members also reported on the status of their efforts at GSDM, including the success of “Chill and Drill” events and their work with Course Directors to restructure and improve classes and improve the teaching assistant system.

ASDA members at the recognition lunch talked about their experiences at the March 2013 ASDA Annual Session in Atlanta, Georgia. An overarching theme they drew from the event was an increasing emphasis on interprofessional education and care. They proudly reported winning the Crest Oral B Community Dentistry Award. The GSDM participants in the ASDA Annual Session were Sammy Gill DMD 14, Antonio Maceda-Johnson DMD 15, Jessica Metcalfe DMD 15, Zara Nensey DMD 14, Khamir Patel AS 14, and Jay Patel DMD 14.

Representatives who attended ASDA National Lobby Day in Washington, DC, in April 2013 discussed their introduction to lobbying and talked about some of the important legislation affecting the oral health care field. The attendees of ASDA National Lobby Day were Dalal Alhajji DMD 14, Marc Horton DMD 14, Dave Lane DMD 16, Zara Nensy DMD 14, Jay Patel DMD 14, Darshit Shah AS 13, and Wyatt Traina DMD 14.

Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter said, “It is a valuable experience for students to represent Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine at the national leadership level. I am proud to have such outstanding students serve as the School’s representatives and impressed with their presentations and their comprehensive knowledge of the subjects that they discussed.”

At the conclusion of the lunch, the following students were presented with awards for Student Recognition for Outstanding Contribution to ASDA: Danielle Berkowitz, Sonya Evans, Jenny Lorenzo, Rachel Lukas, and Caitlin Reddy (all DMD 13) along with Delsaz Sultan AS 13. Assistant Director of Student Affairs Erica Manczuk won the Student Advocate Award.

Said Assistant Dean of Students Dr. Joseph Calabrese, “This was a great opportunity for our ASDA chapter to recognize the hard work of this year’s graduating students. I extend my congratulations to them on their accomplishments. Our chapter has benefited greatly from their time at Boston University.”
