Dean and Mrs. Hutter Open Their Home to New Students

reception-2012-200For the third year, Dean and Mrs. Jeffrey W. Hutter welcomed new students to their Newton, Massachusetts home during pre-doctoral orientation week.

Over three days, six groups of students boarded a shuttle bus at the School and headed to the Hutters’ home. Groups were assigned names honoring BU and GSDM people and places, including the Goldman, Frankl, Hutter, Terrier, South End, and Fenway groups.

The Dean’s receptions offered the DMD Class of 2016 and the Advanced Standing (AS) Class of 2014 an opportunity to socialize and learn more about one another and to meet several faculty and staff who also participated in the receptions. GSDM Alumni Association President, Dr. Tina Valades, and her husband Ralph, along with GSDM Alumni Association President-elect, Dr. Mitch Sabbagh, were present to also welcome the new students to the School. Conversations over the receptions revealed the classes’ healthy interest in extracurricular activities. Director of Alumni Relations Stacey McNamee identified a trombonist among the DMD students—a potential recruit for the GSDM band, the Mental Blocks. Other discussions included organizing a winter ski trip, salsa dancing in the South End, and looking forward to the Student vs. Faculty basketball game.

There are several sets of siblings in the incoming classes. The AS class includes a brother and sister, a pair of brothers, and a set of twin sisters. The DMD class includes a pair of sisters.

“Kathy and I look forward to the Welcome Receptions each year,” said Dean Hutter. “The tradition of welcoming new pre-doctoral students into our home certainly represents welcoming them into the GSDM family.”

Special thanks go to Event & Meeting Planner Lindsay Corrigan for organizing the event.
