OMFS Department Shines at AAOMS Annual Session

Residents and faculty from Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery attended the Annual Session of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) held in Philadelphia earlier this month.
Chair of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs Dr. Pushkar Mehra and Director of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program/Advanced Specialty Education Program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at BMC and GSDM Dr. David Cottrell were two of the three elected delegates from Massachusetts who attended the House of Delegates Parliamentary Sessions. Representing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the District 1 Caucus, they were heavily involved in the political sessions and debates, which preceded the start of the scientific sessions. Director of Head and Neck Oncology Dr. Andrew Salama attended the specially organized Oncology and Reconstruction Preconference Scientific Sessions.
OMFS residents also got involved at the session with oral abstract and poster presentations of their research. The following presentations were made:
“Analysis of Racial Disparities in Head & Neck Fractures,” by Mark Jesin OMFS 12. Jesin worked with Stephanie Rashewsky, William Tobler, Dr. Suresh Agarwal, Dr. Peter Burke, and Dr. Andrew Salama to complete his research.
“Pharmacological Manipulation of Prostaglandins in Third Molar Surgery,” by Mohammed Nadershah OMFS 11. Nadershah is currently completing a one-year OMFS cancer-care fellowship. He worked with Dr. Pushkar Mehra, Dr. Uday Reebye, and Dr. David Cottrell on this research.
“TMJ Arthrocentesis: Results of 10-Year Experience,” by Mathew Steuer OMFS 13. Steuer worked with Dr. Pushkar Mehra and Dr. Wael Youseff to complete his research.
Nadershah’s poster won an award for the Best Oral Scientific Abstract Presentation. His research showed postoperative outcomes following third molar removal. Jesin also received some exciting news related to his poster, when the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery encouraged him to consider publishing his trauma research in the journal because of its exceptional quality.
