New Student Group Forms With Focus on Uniformed Services

On August 30, Brad Cammack DMD 12 led a meeting to discuss a new student group, the Uniformed Services Student Dental Association (USSDA), which he has been instrumental in forming at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM). USSDA’s goals are to promote awareness of dentistry in the Armed Forces and the Public Health Service, provide support and assistance to fellow dental students in the Uniformed Services, and to uphold their commitment to service through community outreach in local areas of need.

The group is open to all pre and postdoctoral students. Cammack hopes that USSDA will attract students who are currently attending GSDM through the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), have previously served in the military, or are interested in learning about the benefits of the Uniformed Services.

Elections for leadership roles in USSDA will be held on September 8 and Cammack is working to set up relevant lunch and learns and volunteer opportunities for the group. Many HPSP and USPHS students also volunteered at the recent Massachusetts Stand Down on August 27 and 28 and the group hopes to take an official leadership role in the organization of this volunteer effort, in cooperation with the Division of Community Health Programs, next year.

"I am very pleased to see this student group come together," said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. "I am confident it will serve an important purpose and be an excellent addition to our student groups at GSDM."
