Comprehensive Program Presented at Updates in General Dentistry Conference

Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) Professor and Chair of General Dentistry Dr. Judith Jones welcomed General Dentistry faculty, students, and Extramural Program preceptors to the 8th Annual Updates in General Dentistry Conference on April 9.

Morning speakers included Chair and the Herbert Schilder Professor in Endodontics and Director of the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Endodontics Dr. George Huang whose presentation was titled, "Regenerative Endodontics and Tooth Regeneration," and keynote speaker Dr. Robert Henry. Dr. Henry is Chair of the Dental Service and Director of Geriatric Dental Services at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky and Clinical Associate Professor at University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. His comprehensive keynote presentation was titled, "Anticoagulants and Oral Surgery: An Evidence-based Approach," and explored the different options for treating patients taking antithrombotic and/or anticoagulant medications, including the various risks and benefits associated with each.

After lunch participants were divided into groups of faculty and preceptors for breakout sessions. The preceptors were instructed on how to complete online student evaluations and the faculty members were taught about a clinical information system that allowed them to use electronic data to document outcomes of care.

Both groups reunited later in the afternoon for a presentation by Associate Professor Dr. Paul Farsai titled, "Review of Evidence in Special Care and Geriatric Dentistry: the Genesis of a Pilot Program," and a discussion of the GSDM Applied Strategic Planning and Space Programming projects by Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter and Assistant Dean of Pre-doctoral Clinical Education Dr. John Guarrente.  The conference then closed with a reception for all attendees.
