GSDM Students Honored at Science and Engineering Day 2010

University-wide Science and Engineering Day 2010 was held on March 30 in the George Sherman Union. The annual event is designed to highlight graduate students’ scientific research on both the Charles River and Medical Center campuses.

At the event the Provost’s Award was presented to Siddika Selva Sume ORAL BIO 10. Sume’s research was titled, "Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition in Gingival Overgrowth,” and was completed with the help of Dr. Alpdogan Kantarci, Alan Lee, Dr. Hatice Hasturk, and Dr. Philip Trackman.

The Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine Dean’s Award was presented to Mai Zamakhchari PERIO 11 for research titled, "Role of NADPH Oxidase in the Pathogenesis of Diabetic Complications," which was completed under the guidance of Dr. Robert Gyurko and Dr. Thomas Van Dyke.

“Our predoctoral students’ commitment to research was evident in the high quality of poster exhibits presented at this year’s Science & Engineering Day," said Professor and Director of the Predoctoral Research Program Dr. Maria Kukuruzinska. "Moreover, the excellence of research at GSDM was highlighted by the receipt of the Provost’s Award by a postdoctoral student who trained in Dr. Philip Trackman’s laboratory in the Department of Periodontology and Oral Biology.”
