GSDM Volunteers Get Involved in Science in the Summer

Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) Division of Community Health Programs (CHP) Oral Health Promotion Director Kathy Lituri led a team of student and staff volunteers at the Science in the Summer Program held at Dorchester Neighborhood Service Center (DNSC) on July 22.

The volunteers facilitated the Passport to Dental Health event, which featured six stations plus an arts and crafts table for 40 children between the ages of five and 12 years old. Children participated in the event by visiting each station to earn a stamp on their passports. Stations included brushing, flossing, and plaque removal; consequences of tobacco use; tooth protectors; dental careers and visiting the dentist; the importance of healthy teeth; and healthy food for healthy teeth.

Lituri has organized the Passport to Dental Health event at other locations with successful results. She encourages dental students to get involved with this and other CHP outreach efforts adding, "This is an excellent opportunity to get involved in a community based program and to have a positive impact on a child."
