Madalyn Mann Surprised With Retirement Party

A surprise retirement party for Director of APEX & Extramural Programs Madalyn Mann was held on June 12 at the Boston University Metcalf Trustee Ballroom. The party celebrated Mann’s 33 years of service to the School.
Family, friends, and Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine (BUGSDM) colleagues turned out to wish a very surprised Mann well. Five speakers, including Assistant Professor and Alumni Board President Dr. Joseph Calabrese on behalf of himself and Dean ad interim Dr. Jeffrey Hutter, Professor and Director of Predoctoral Removable Prosthodontics Dr. Jean Emerling on behalf of herself and Associate Dean for Administration and Director of the Geriatric Fellowship Program Dr. Paula Friedman, Professor and Chair of General Dentistry Dr. Judith Jones, Professor and Assistant Dean for Community Partnerships and Extramural Affairs Dr. Michelle Henshaw, and Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Services Dr. Sydell Shaw shared their experiences working with Mann during a series of remarks given at the party.
"Madi has left an indelible mark on our school and everyone that has been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity of being in contact with her," said Dr. Hutter. "During her time at our school, she has touched so many lives and each one of us is a better person as a result."
"For teaching all our students; and nurturing them too; as they went out into the world; or even stayed at BU; we thank you," rhymed Dr. Jones during her reading of a poem written about Mann. She continued, "Into retirement you go; new adventures lie ahead; much more time for family and for friends; but, never ever be a stranger; come back when you can; we will keep for you a warm place in our hearts."
Dr. Henshaw added, "Though Madi’s leadership, vision, and determination have helped build the foundation for our own extramural programs and have contributed tremendously to BUGSDM students’ education, our students are not the only ones to have benefited. For Madi is a true pioneer in the area of community based dental education and has helped influence dental education not only here but across the nation as well. It is with heartfelt gratitude that I thank Madi for her innumerable professional and personal contributions to BUGSDM and to community based dental education."
Dr. Shaw concluded the speeches adding, "Madi, you have been a true inspiration to the faculty, staff, and student body. Your loyalty and dedication to the School and in turn the students in second to none."
