Entering Class Begins “a New and Important Journey”

The entering DMD and AS classes quickly filled Bakst Auditorium August 2 as they filed in to take the Oath of the DMD Class of 2011 and Advanced Standing Program Class of 2009 at BUSDM’s Professional Ceremony. The oath pledges students’ service to humanity, patients, community, and the profession of dentistry.

"This ceremony marks the beginning of a new and important journey," said Senior Associate Dean Dr. Jeffrey Hutter, who began the ceremony. "You are the best of the best and I know that I speak for the entire faculty and staff when I say that we feel privileged and deeply gratified that you made the decision to attend BUSDM."

Associate Dean for Clinical Services Dr. Stephen DuLong gave an inspirational speech about why he loves BUSDM, having studied and taught at the school. "You will always remember your time at dental school," he said. Dulong assured students they have chosen an exciting profession and encouraged them to get involved in research and education in the future.

Dulong invited students to the stage to receive BUSDM pins from and greet General Dentistry Chair Dr. Judith Jones, Associate Dean, Admissions and Student Services Dr. Sydell Shaw, Advanced Standing Program Director Dr. Nargess Ashayeri, Dr. Hutter, and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Cataldo Leone. After receiving their pins, students recited the oath together.

"Whether you choose patient care, research, education, or health policy as a focus in your career, as a graduate of Boston University you will be well prepared to meet the challenges that lie before you," Dr. Hutter told students. "I congratulate you on joining the School of Dental Medicine and the dental profession and welcome you to Boston University."

A barbecue for students and their families followed on Talbot Green. Photos from both the ceremony and barbecue are available online.
