Program White Coat Turns Boston Children into Tomorrow’s Dentists

Boston University School of Dental Medicine welcomed 17 Boston-area children ages 9 to 11 during the week of July 23 to 27 for the third annual Program White Coat, the school’s career exploration day program introducing children to dentistry and other health professions.

The program is one of BUSDM’s pipeline programs, which encourage underrepresented minorities and economically disadvantaged students to attend and succeed in dental school.

BUSDM faculty and staff led children through an interactive schedule emphasizing professionalism and learning. Participants role played in the school’s state-of-the-art Simulation Learning Center; conducted experiments in Boston University’s CityLab; learned to make impressions, take vital signs, and examine X-rays; and visited the Museum of Science.

Program White Coat superhero Captain Cavity Fighter, the disguised third-year dental student Joe Ayitey-Adjin, guided children throughout the week.
