General Dentistry Conference Keeps Faculty Up-to-Date

Department Chair Dr. Judith Jones welcomed faculty in the Department of General Dentistry as they gathered in the 670 Albany Street auditorium Monday morning to attend Updates in General Dentistry, an annual conference to discuss the latest research and techniques in the field.

Dr. Philippe Hujoel, professor at the University of Washington Schools of Dentistry and Public Health, gave the keynote address on "Non-surgical periodontal therapy: evidence-based versus traditional practice." He stressed the importance of fluoride in fighting caries and periodontal disease.

Dr. Thomas Van Dyke, director of BUSDM’s Clinical Research Center, presented "Management of inflammation in periodontal disease." He discussed his team’s approach to fighting inflammation with resolvins, anti-inflammatory molecules produced naturally by the body.

Dr. Dan Nathanson, chair of the Department of Restorative Sciences/Biomaterials, spoke about "Longevity of posterior composites." Dr. Bing Liu, assistant professor in the Department of General Dentistry discussed "Salivary diagnostics."

Faculty discussed ways to improve students’ experiences in the patient treatment centers and during externships in afternoon sessions in Hiebert Lounge.
