Perlman Praised for Community Service

Dr. Steven Perlman PEDO 76, associate clinical professor of pediatric dentistry and pioneer of the Special Olympics Special Smiles program, recently garnered two awards recognizing his commitment to children with disabilities throughout his career.

Exceptional Parent magazine and MassMutual Financial Group presented Perlman with the EP Maxwell J. Schleifer Distinguished Service Award for his efforts on behalf of the people with disabilities. Perlman accepted the award August 30 at the Lowell Spinners Disabilities Awareness Night baseball game where he threw out the first pitch.

Adding to Perlman’s PEOPLE, the international dental organization Alpha Omega (AO) last week notified Perlman that he is the 2005 recipient of the Trudi Birger Community Service Award. Established in 2003, the award annually goes to an individual who has “performed exemplary service to his/her community.”

Notifying Perlman of his award last week, the chair of AO’s Awards and Presentations Committee noted that Perlman has “made an extraordinary contribution to special needs children all over the world.”
