Learning Assistant Program
The Boston University Learning Assistant (LA) program began in the spring of 2011 in the Chemistry department. The program has since expanded across colleges to dozens of courses, serving the needs of thousands of students each year.
The LA program strives to enhance learning outcomes and foster positive learning environments in undergraduate courses at Boston University. Learning Assistants play critical roles in helping students get the most out of their Chemistry courses. By working with the faculty teaching the course, and training in science pedagogy through a seminar taught by the Wheelock College of Education and Human Development, Learning Assistants demonstrate effective peer education in our classrooms and help give back to the courses that they took in previous years.
Currently, Learning Assistants play key teaching and support roles in eight Chemistry courses: General Chemistry (CH101 and CH102, in discussion sections); Advanced General Chemistry (CH109 and CH110, in lab sections); Intensive General Chemistry (CH111 and CH112, in both labs and discussions); Quantitative Analytical Chemistry lab (CH201); and Principles of Chemistry (CH171).
The talented LAs — current and former — have been led to transformative positive change and are leaders in the course, department, and university. Former Learning Assistants have gone on to exciting careers in medicine, teaching, science, and more!
