How to Hold a Vigil at BU
From time to time events of local, national or international importance compel the Boston University community to come together in solidarity and support with each other and those immediately affected. This page is a resource and guide for those who would like to organize a vigil. Like any event a vigil involves clear planning, mindful execution, and a respectful atmosphere.
Reserve Marsh Plaza
- Reservations for a vigil can only be made by a Registered Student Group or a Department.
- Reservations should be made at least two weeks in advance via 25Live.
- In cases of short notice, email our main office as soon as possible to ask about availability. Marsh Chapel hosts 800+ events per year, so keep in mind that time and space may be limited.
Marsh Plaza Guidelines: Amplified sound is not allowed on Marsh Plaza during class times or when events are being held inside the Chapel. Passage, access, and egress for all across the Plaza must be taken under consideration. Tape, adhesive, paint, and chalk may not be used on any surface of Marsh Plaza, including the stone.

Plan a Program and Contact Speakers
University Chaplains are available to support the planning process of a vigil. They can share resources and have a conversation about best practices. A chaplain may also be available to participate if requested.
If contacting outside speakers be sure to give them as much lead time as possible and make any arrangements for payment ahead of time. Please note that BU SAO groups are not allowed to enter into contracts with speakers and instead must go through SAO first.
Amplified Sound: Amplified sound is not allowed on Marsh Plaza during times when classes are in session.
