Our Approach
Horizontal reviews give a broader view of the effectiveness of specific critical controls across the University rather than an assessment of all controls within a specific unit. These reviews will often involve significant use of data analytics and collaborating closely with process owners and stakeholders to fully understand the current processes, the related risks, and present an opportunity to add greater value to the University with any resulting observations and recommendations.
During horizontal reviews we:
- Collaborate with you to understand your objectives and current processes (via inquiry, observation, walkthroughs and process flows)
- Identify and evaluate the risks and control environment in place to mitigate these risks
- Test the adequacy and effectiveness of the controls in place, if needed
- Identify and provide recommendations that help strengthen controls and/or process efficiencies
Vertical (Departmental) Reviews:
Vertical reviews are a review of the key operational, financial and compliance risks related controls at the department level. These form an integral part of our services, particularly with regards to departments with large sponsored research programs.
During vertical reviews we:
- Work with you to understand your environment, objectives, key processes and controls
- Using a risk-based approach, perform an objective review of the key processes and controls in place within your department
- Test the adequacy and effectiveness of the controls in place
- Identify and provide recommendations that help strengthen controls and/or process efficiencies
