AIAS Best Paper: Gaining Insight into Brain Damage and Rehabilitation through Digital Twins

October 27th – 28th, 2025

Risto Miikkulainen presents on stage at AIAS 2025.

Center for Brain Recovery researchers Swathi Kiran (CBR Founding Director) and Risto Miikkulainen (CBR Affiliate) were invited to present their work in the Best Paper Presentation session at the 2025 Chen Institute Symposium for AI Accelerated Science (AIAS). Out of more than 60 submissions and 29 accepted papers, Drs. Kiran and Miikkulainen’s paper was one of four selected for a main-stage presentation.

Risto Miikkulainen presented their research titled “Gaining Insight into Brain Damage and Rehabilitation through Digital Twins” on stage for conference attendees. The presentation highlighted how the Center for Brain Recovery and its collaborators are applying machine learning tools to neurological disorder treatment by creating digital twins of individual patients. These models are capable of simulating stroke or dementia damage and predicting the effects of treatment on the patient.

Throughout the 2-day conference, the Center for Brain Recovery also had a designated booth where CBR team members Matthew VanDemark and Kalli Miller shared information with attendees about CBR’s research initiatives and how artificial intelligence tools are being leveraged to advance the Center’s mission.

The Center for Brain Recovery has numerous published and on-going research studies that apply AI and machine learning to uncover how brain structure, connectivity, and experience shape language recovery.
