Newly Released: The Cambridge Handbook of Language and Brain
The first edition of The Cambridge Handbook of Language and Brain was recently released and is now available to readers. This state-of-the-art handbook was co-edited by Dr. Swathi Kiran, Founding Director of the Boston University Center for Brain Recovery, and Dr. Edna Andrews from Duke University.
This text serves as a comprehensive survey of the field of language and brain, with contributions from over 30 world-renowned and interdisciplinary experts in the areas of neuroscience, linguistics, and psychology. They represent institutions across North America, Europe, and Asia, and bring expertise in areas ranging from bilingualism and aphasia to neuroimaging, music cognition, and developmental disorders.
The contents of this handbook explore important developments within the field, capturing theoretical shifts and technological advancements, as well as informing future directions.
Divided into six parts, the topics covered include:
- Theoretical foundations about language processing networks in both healthy individuals and those with pathologies
- Neuroimaging studies such as fMRI, electrophysiology, and TMS—to study language and cognitive reserve, especially in bilinguals
- Language and cognitive development, including aphasia recovery, psycholinguistics, and the role of the default mode network
- Variations of language representations in the brain including bilingualism, second language acquisition, and multilingual mental lexicons, as well as language control in aphasia and autism
- Brain, language, and music highlighting neuroplasticity and shared brain mechanisms
- New directions and perspectives including the role of hippocampal memory in communication and memory disorders.
The Cambridge Handbook of Language and Brain is an essential resource for researchers and scholars looking for a complete and updated overview of the field of language and brain.
