Dennis Berkey

Dennis Berkey is a native of Ohio, with degrees in mathematics from Muskingum College (BA) and the
University of Cincinnati (PhD). He served on the faculty of Boston University for 30 years, as a faculty
member in the Department of Mathematics, winning the University’s highest teaching award, and in the
administration as Dean of Arts and Sciences and as University Provost. His published research is in
applied mathematics and he has authored several widely used calculus texts. He served for nine years as
the 15 th President of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, bringing financial stability, growth in student
enrollments and quality, noted innovations in engineering education, and civic leadership. He has served
on numerous boards, including the Massachusetts High Technology Council, the U. S. Competitive
Council, UMass/Memorial Health Care, and the Massachusetts Education and Finance Authority. Now
retired from fulltime employment, he currently serves on the board of PrepMD, a training company in
the medical device industry, and as a trustee of the Davis Educational Foundation, which makes grants
to colleges and universities in New England for the purposes of reducing costs and/or improving the
quality of teaching and learning. He is married to Dr. Catherine Berkey, BU/GRS ’75, now a retired
research statistician formerly at the Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Womens’ Hospital. They
reside in Boston and Osterville, MA, and have three grown children and five grandchildren.
