The BU Physics Department, in collaboration with the Graphene Research Centre of the National University of Singapore (NUS), plans to launch this fall an international and collaborative academic exchange on graphene. The exchange will support scholarship and research visits to the NUS Graphene Research Centre (GRC) in Singapore by BU students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty. Reciprocal visits will be made to BU by NUS students and faculty. The new initiative is being funded by a gift from Banco Santander through its U.S. subsidiary, Sovereign Bank, and through the Santander Universities Global Division, which implements the bank’s social action programs.
Graphene has recently burst onto the scene as one of the most interesting and promising materials of our time. Made of a single layer of microscopic carbon atoms that looks like chicken wire, graphene has unique properties which make it fascinating for scientists and commercial developers alike. BU faculty and students participating in the new program in Singapore will have access to the GRC’s state-of-the-art nanofabrication facility and specialized research tools. Faculty members involved include Rick Averitt, David Campbell, Antonio Castro Neto, Claudio Chamon, Bennett Goldberg, Anatoli Polkovnikov, Claudio Rebbi, Sid Redner, and Anders Sandvik of the BU Physics Department, and Richard Brower, Kamil Ekinci, Harold Park, David Bishop, and Anna Swan of the College of Engineering.
