Dear Arts & Sciences Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I am very pleased to announce the formation of the CAS Diversity & Inclusion Action Team. This Action Team was formally recommended by the CAS Diversity & Inclusion Committee’s 2017 report. It will serve as a representative group across CAS & GRS that will facilitate and implement diversity and inclusion efforts, while aiding the Dean’s Office in the allocation of resources to support these efforts. Along with coordinating and supporting the remarkable range of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts active across the Arts & Sciences community, the Team will support and encourage new courses and collaborations; aid in the creation, updating and inventory of relevant curricula; co-sponsor and recommend visiting scholars and events; and participate in the hiring of a CAS Associate Dean for Diversity & Inclusion. I expect these specific charges to evolve over time as the inaugural Action Team begins its work this year.  The new Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, once hired, may decide to adjust or amend the Team’s composition and charge in consultation with the Action Team co-chairs and myself.

I would like to thank all the members of the Action Team for agreeing to serve this inaugural year. In particular, I would like to recognize Louis Chude-Sokei, Professor of English, George And Joyce Wein Chair in African American Studies, Director of The African American Studies Program, and Maurice Lee, Professor of English, for agreeing to Co-Chair the Team. There is significant work to be done, and I trust that the entire team will be strong and engaged advocates on behalf of the Arts & Sciences community. As Dean, I am deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Creating an environment where everyone can thrive is one of the foundational commitments of my work. I have been impressed with the variety of ways that the CAS community – students, faculty, and staff – has come together, working to integrate antiracism into our actions and processes in the College.  Important strides have been made. And we now face an opportune moment for more integrated work across the College. Student groups have come forward to urge us and help us in doing this work. Departments and programs are eager to make substantial and sustainable progress in their own work, so that together we can make CAS a more inclusive place for all. I am committed to continued efforts around faculty recruitment, rethinking curricula, the development of inclusive pedagogy, and the fostering of a welcoming community and climate for all. There is much work yet to be done, and the partnership of the Action Team will be important in moving us forward.
