Who’s connected to a lampshade—and why?

E very issue, we challenge Andy Costello, BU Photography’s digital imaging manager, to find something in the BU archives related to one of our feature stories. This time, he hunted for a photo with a connection to biology to celebrate our profile of biologist turned vintner Jim Verde (Wheelock’61, GRS’63).

This photo was taken on January 4, 1961, 16 days before John F. Kennedy’s inauguration and just over three months before Yuri Gagarin blasted into space. The description on the envelope holding the original negatives gives us only a few clues about why a student is connected to the small lampshade-like device: “Biology pictures for EVE bulletin—student breathing experiment.” We also know the photo was taken at the Stone Science Building at what was called the Division of Continuing Education.

But that’s all we have—which is where you come in. Was this a regular test and what was its purpose? Is that you—or a treasured classmate—in the photo? What do you remember of the College of Liberal Arts’ continuing education program? Even if you don’t have the answers, but this photo sparks happy memories of BU in the 1960s, we’d love to hear from you.

And don’t forget to see what readers had to say about last issue’s photo from the archives: the professor in the gorilla suit.
