College of Arts & Sciences: 1873-2023

One hundred and fifty years ago, a small band of four faculty members gathered in a cramped Beacon Hill townhouse to teach 22 young women and men in what would be the first year of the College of Liberal Arts (now the College of Arts & Sciences) and, thus, the first year of undergraduate education at Boston University. Clearly, much has changed since that first humble year of classes. Our College now boasts some 8,500 undergraduates, 2,250 graduate students, 900 faculty members, and 200 degree programs. As we celebrate our 150th year, we look back at the people, places, and events that remain a part of who we are today.
