What is one thing you wish you knew about Boston/BU before coming?

You need a sturdy umbrella, comfortable walking shoes, and some form of winter boots. Since I came to BU from Minnesota, everyone expected me to be completely prepared for Boston winters as well, but they couldn’t be more wrong! In Minnesota we have mastered the art of layering, driving in cars everywhere, and making sure that we have seat and steering wheel heaters. None of which included a good pair of winter boots, so I HIGHLY recommend getting some before coming to campus because you’ll have to walk through the snow at some point. Walking around in sneakers that are soaking wet and somewhat frozen is not ideal. Going along with that I would also suggest that you get a good umbrella. I have already lost two amazing umbrellas to the wind, so I recommend buying that nice umbrella even if it doesn’t seem like it’s worth the money. You never know if you’ll need to whip it out of your backpack when it starts to spontaneously pour. That being said, a little rain never hurt nobody, so if you’re more of a rain jacket person then that’s fine too! As long as you have something to combat the rain you’ll be good to go! Lastly, your best friend at BU will be comfortable walking shoes, or blister bandaids if you’re breaking those new shoes in. BU is a walking campus and the best thing you can do before coming here is find the best shoes to do that in. I know I regretted bringing stiff shoes and I suffered from MANY blisters, so please please please bring comfortable shoes!
