Professors of African American Studies and History Linda Heywood and John Thornton were both elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences (AAAS). Over 250 individuals from institutes around the country were named to the Academy in 2020. The AAAS was founded in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock, and others who believed the new republic should honor exceptionally accomplished individuals and engage them in advancing the public good.
