It’s becoming increasingly important to tell stories that engage and inform—and even entertain– the public. Activating people’s affect, like humor, suspense, and amazement, is as important as their intellect. Visual [...]storytelling is a powerful tool to compete with the images that bombard us and, as our lives become more digital, the handmade and the material have a new pull. Puppetry and other forms of object performance are experiencing a renaissance in the US and across the globe. While traditionally used to convey narrative content, in this course, you will investigate how animated objects can communicate and illustrate abstract theories, philosophies, and complex processes. Participants will research puppets and related objects and how and why they work. They will engage in analyzing ideas, making and performing, reflecting and giving feedback.

What does it mean when we talk about social isolation and stigma in Global health? What happens when a phrase like “Foreign Virus†is causally expressed through the media and countries are “blamed†for a pandemic? Students [...]throughout the course will research ways cross-cultural perspectives can inform and counter false ideas about COVID-19 and help prevent further cultural stigma. The deliverables will highlight how to better inform the BU campus and its local Boston communities of COVID-19 and exemplify the need to look at health within a Global context.

HUB-XCC’s Spirit of Wonder Course allows students to learn the Spirit of Wonder (SOW) research model, including interviewing, video blogging and essay writing. This course provides students with the opportunity to study and practice social [...]cross-cultural research methodologies, including designing qualitative research questions, connecting and engaging with targeted populations, collecting data through SOW’s storytelling interviews, analyzing data, and presenting their findings in written and visual formats. Students receive the tools they need to interview candidates, analyze their stories and develop narratives, comparative analysis and presentations on various themes. This course also requires students to work effectively in teams to develop creative strategies for presenting their research to a broader public and to recommend additional research strategies and uses of the data. Initially, students will work individually to practice the skills needed to succeed in the class. Subsequently, students will work with their peers to process the interview data as a team. Each team will choose a target population locally or internationally. Students will be supported by the SOW project team as needed.

Everyone is now required to learn increasing amounts at every stage of life, for work as well as for leisure. This will require new ways to learn. One is by modifying and rearranging parts to make a whole—such as a description, a procedure, or [...]a poem. The Knowla project at Boston University explores ways to use technology assistance both to learn and to assess learning. Knowla will be explained, including its contrast with artificial intelligence. Each team in the class will explore an aspect of learning exemplified by Knowla. These will range from basic questions like “How do we test for learning?†and “How much can be learned in various fields from modifying and rearranging fragments of text?†to questions such as “How can Knowla developers best communicate their goals and solicit feedback from instructors?†to more technical ones such as “Can we learn faster by efficiently creating and solving puzzles?†and “How can tools—AI and not—enhance learning?â€
