Meaningful Advising and Millennials: Knowing Our Students as a Foundation for Connection
Rachel I. Reiser, Assistant Dean for the Undergraduate Program, School of Management
There is extensive research on the topic of the Millennial Generation [...]and their impact upon and desires for the environments of which they are a part. This session explores some of the collective characteristics ascribed to Millennials and how that influences our work with them as advisors. Rachel Reiser, a thought-leader on the Millennial Generation, will focus on some of the more significant influences on our Millennial students, and some of the resulting patterns that we see, including the rise in mental health concerns, the impact of technology, parental involvement, educating for global citizenship, and the development of self-efficacy.
There will be ample opportunity for you to participate in round table discussions on relevant questions, and share with all symposium attendees resulting key ideas and findings. We hope that you will leave with ideas for enhancing advising relationships in the age of the millennial student.

Boston University’s 5th Annual Academic Advising Symposium welcomes distinguished scholar and social psychologist, Dr. Geoff Cohen, of Stanford University. Dr. Cohen will address how marginalized groups experience belonging, community, and mentorship on college campuses.
We will explore underrepresented voices, breaking down barriers of divisiveness, and methodologies to connect with students in meaningful and authentic ways.
The symposium will also welcome leaders from the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground to relate these themes to students on our campus, and Hub Advising, to explore how we can incorporate such intentional advising practices going forward.
