On February 5, 2026, Dr. Ann McKee delivered the annual University Lecture entitled, “Providence, Persistence, and Resilience: The Road to CTE.”
Over the past 2 decades, there has been a remarkable rise in public interest and scientific [...]research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is now a household name, a focus for millions of VA and NIH research dollars and international research efforts, and the principal reason that important rule and policy changes regarding concussion and non-concussive injuries have been implemented in contact sports and the military. Under the directorship of Dr. McKee, the Boston University CTE Center is the global epicenter of research on CTE and post-traumatic neurodegeneration. Dr. McKee founded the BU CTE brain bank in 2008, which is the world's largest brain bank focused on brain trauma (now over 1700 brains). This groundbreaking work has led to medical and public awareness of the dangers of repetitive mild brain trauma.
The University Lecture was established in 1950 to honor members of the Boston University faculty engaged in outstanding research and creative pursuits. University Lecturers represent a vast array of disciplines and research topics, yet they share a common commitment to excellence in scholarly inquiry and discovery.
