More than 300 alumni, family, and friends came to campus in September for the Boston University Alumni Association’s annual Best of BU Luncheon, which celebrates the achievements of the University’s Distinguished Alumni Award and Young Alumni Award recipients.
“The presentation of these awards is one of the time-honored traditions of the Alumni Association,” said BUAA president Mary Buletza at the ceremony held on September 20 during Alumni Weekend. “These individuals have made a significant impact by bringing credit to their communities, their professions, and to the University.”
This year, the association’s highest honor was awarded to three outstanding alums: Howard Bauchner (MED’79), editor in chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association; Jeanette Horan (GSM’93), vice president and CIO of IBM; and triathlete Rick Hoyt, Jr. (SED’93). Entrepreneur and investment manager Mikhail Gurevich (ENG’07, GSM’12) and Matthew Trevithick (CGS’06, CAS’08), an author and humanitarian who is championing the creation of a rowing club in Kabul, Afghanistan, received BU Young Alumni Awards.
Howard Bauchner (MED’79)
Since 2011, Bauchner has been editor in chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association, one of the most respected peer-reviewed journals in the world. He was a BU School of Medicine faculty member for more than 25 years, and served as vice chairman of the MED pediatrics department and as assistant dean for alumni affairs and continuing education.
Jeanette Horan (GSM’93)
Horan, who has been chief information officer of IBM since May 2011, leads the development and implementation of the company’s technology strategy. A native of the United Kingdom, Horan earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of London and an MBA from BU’s Graduate School of Management.
Richard Hoyt, Jr. (SED’93)
Hoyt is a triathlete, author, and founder and spokesperson for the Hoyt Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping people with disabilities lead fulfilling, integrated lives. Born in 1962 with cerebral palsy, Hoyt is unable to walk or speak. But with the help of a computer he controls by moving his head, he attended public schools, graduated from high school, and earned a degree in special education from the BU School of Education in 1993. Since 1977, he and his father have participated in more than 1,100 marathons and triathlons.
Mikhail Gurevich (ENG’07, GSM’12)
Gurevich has been a managing partner at Dominion Capital LLC in New York since 2011. He is the founder of ClickFacts, a web security and analytics company he started in 2005, and ZepInvest, a distribution network for financial sources. He is a mentor at the Entrepreneurs Roundtable Accelerator in New York City, where he helps other entrepreneurs grow their startup companies.
Matthew Trevithick (CGS’06, CAS’08)
Trevithick is a silver medalist from the 2008 Head of the Charles Regatta and former BU men’s rowing team member. He helped coach the Iraqi National Rowing team to its first medal on the world stage in 2010, and is a driving force in the creation of the Afghan National Rowing team. He is the cofounder and director of research of the Syria Research and Evaluation Organization, a research center in southern Turkey focusing on the humanitarian crisis in Syria. Trevithick’s first book, An Undesirable Element: An Afghan Memoir—a collaboration with the first post-Taliban minister of higher education—was published this year.
