Internship title: Understanding Diversity at BUSM
Description of Internship Project: This internship project will review and collect data on all aspects of diversity at Boston University School of Medicine including statistics regarding race, ethnicity, gender, and other distinguishing characteristics of students, faculty and staff. The project will also look into pipeline programs at the high-school and college level to gain a better understanding of the challenges and successes of such programs, and to develop metrics to assess programmatic and individual accomplishments.
Responsibilities of the intern: The intern will assist in the collection, organization, graphic representation, and analysis of data. Additionally, the intern will collaborate in interpreting statistics and translating them into meaningful information to be used for the betterment of programs dedicated to increasing diversity, equity and inclusion at BUSM.
Description of Deliverable at Completion of Internship: The deliverable will consist of an analysis report with tables and graphics complemented by a description of the historical evolution of diversity at BUSM and projections into the future. The information included in the report will be used in presentations to share information and explain diversity-related strategies.
Evaluation of the deliverable: The deliverables will be evaluated based on the accuracy and understandability of the data, the clarity of the graphics, the depth and breadth of the analysis, and the impact the report may have on current and future programs and activities managed by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.
Mentor / Reporting for the intern: The intern will work with and report to their mentors who are deans for diversity and multicultural affairs, respectively, at BUSM.
Professional Development Objectives/ Benefits to the intern: The intern will gain an in-depth understanding of the importance of diversity in medical education and health care and will become familiar with the issues impacting underrepresented minorities pursuing careers in medicine. The intern will learn how to tabulate and graph data using excel and how to design a colorful and engaging report using Adobe In-design (an industry standard for desktop publishing). We will train the intern in all aspects of diversity and using the computer programs necessary to manage, tabulate and graph data, as well as generating a report.
Requested Qualifications of Intern:The intern should be passionate about diversity-related issues, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, religion, national origin, socio-economic status and other distinguishing characteristics. Additionally, the intern should have an excellent command of the English language with strong writing and editing skills, and familiarity with the Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Planning and organizational skills are highly desirable.
