Aloha mai kākou,

The East-West Center International Graduate Student Conference (IGSC) is accepting abstracts from current graduate students, as well as from scholars, practitioners, artists, and scientists, who have completed a graduate degree within the past three years. IGSC welcomes abstracts globally and from any discipline related to the US and Asia-Pacific region.

This year’s theme is Elucidating the Periphery: Rethinking Neglected Narratives and Novel Approaches.

Scholars, practitioners, artists, and scientists whose work highlights issues, communities, or practices that broadly concern the periphery are invited to submit abstracts to present their work as part of this conference.

Historic events within this decade compelled scholars, practitioners, and artists to confront neglected issues concerning underrepresented communities and innovative practices – of or on the “periphery.” This conference will highlight work, scholarly and otherwise, that illuminates the periphery. Historically, the periphery was used to describe nations outside of powerful ‘core’ countries, but the periphery is now broadly rearticulated to encompass underrepresented fields, backgrounds, peoples, geographies, and novel methodologies in the humanities, social sciences, arts, and the natural sciences.

Seven streams of thought have been identified for presentations:

  1. Social, Political, and Humanitarian Crises
  2. Ecological Dangers and Environmental Hazards
  3. Dilemmas in Economies and Labor
  4. Crises in Public Health and Disability
  5. Peripheral Cultures, Languages, Subjectivities, and Aesthetics
  6. (Re)writing Past and Present Narratives in the Advent of New Technology
  7. Resurgent Epistemologies and Revitalizing Othered Ontologies

Applications for abstracts will be accepted until September 15, 2023, at 11:59PM HST. All abstracts must be submitted in English, with a maximum word count of 350 words. Learn more about the abstract submittal process on our IGSC FAQ page.
