There are 4 comments on YouTube Turns 20—How Have Its 20 Billion Videos Changed Us?

  1. I’ve stopped using it unless it’s the only site that has what I need because of all the ads. Unfortunately the WWW, and most media, have become primarily platforms for selling things.

  2. In the conversation about misinformation about health information on youtube ads, I want to add that the same thing is causing a threat to scholarly work in linguistics. In my writing course, we discuss the consequences of the linguistic relativity hypothesis, one that says that a person’s language determines their worldviews. Though this hypothesis has been proved false for centuries, the fantasy that this hypothesis is true still pervades in society. The popularity of linguistic hypotheses outdoes the meaningful work done in the linguistics field, which is unfortunate. Seeing the spread of misinformation of health advice on youtube just reminded me of something I learned in class and I thought it was important to share. :) Awesome article!!
