February 6 to 9
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Groundhog Day, February 2, which, sadly, means six more weeks of winter. Don’t be disheartened, though—instead, bundle up while you skate on the Boston Common Frog Pond, dance the night away at the K-Pop Bash, or craft a heartfelt card and enjoy some crepes. The good news is there’s no shortage of events to explore—both on campus and throughout Boston.
$10 Commuter Rail Weekends
Take advantage of Boston’s proximity to other New England states: after just an hour’s journey and eight stops on the commuter rail (heading out of South Station), you can arrive in Providence, R.I., for only $10. It’s New England’s third largest city, and home to popular spots like the Nitro Bar, Rhode Island School of Design’s Museum of Art, and the Providence Athenaeum. The $10 weekend fare allows unlimited rides, making it an excellent option for budget-friendly travel.
MBTA Providence/Stoughton Line train, South Station, 700 Atlantic Ave., Boston. Check the MBTA website for the train schedule.
Boston Common Frog Pond Outdoor Ice Rink
Embrace the winter season at the Boston Common Frog Pond, where the outdoor ice rink beckons skaters of all levels. Run by the Skating Club of Boston and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, the pond offers skating as well as locker rentals. When you’re finished skating, grab some fried dough or hot cocoa at the café next door.
Boston Common Frog Pond, 38 Beacon St., Boston; check hours here. Adult admission is $10 and adult skate rentals are $15.
Cards and Crepes with the BU Arts Initiative
With Valentine’s Day (and Galentine’s!) a week away, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the important people in your life and express your appreciation for them. BU Arts Initiative’s February First Friday drop-in event is the place to do just that. It will have all the art supplies needed to create heartfelt cards, plus delectable crepes to enjoy while you craft.
February 7, from 4 to 6 pm, George Sherman Union, Arts Initiative Suite, Room 201, 775 Commonwealth Ave., Boston.
K-Pop Bash
Whether you’re a die-hard K-Pop fan or simply a casual listener, wear your best neon K-Pop-inspired outfits to attend Friday’s miXxplosion: a K-Pop Bash, hosted by multiple BU student organizations. The night will include spirited performances, intense dance-offs, and energetic sing-alongs to all of your favorite K-Pop songs.
February 7, 7:30 to 11:30 pm, Metcalf Ballroom, 775 Commonwealth Ave., Boston. This event is free but requires an RSVP.
Funny Girl at Citizens Opera House
It’s the second-to-last weekend to catch this critically acclaimed production of Funny Girl at Citizens Opera House. The bittersweet comedy about Fanny Brice defying the odds to become one of Broadway’s most beloved stars first opened in 1964, with Barbra Streisand starring in the original production.
Funny Girl runs through February 16 at Citizens Opera House, 539 Washington St., Boston. Purchase tickets here.
