Congratulations on finishing your first month of the semester, Terriers! October is here, and with it comes plenty of ways to unwind after class. Whether you’re looking to cheer for your Terriers on the ice, listen to a symphony, or spend a weekend breathing in the crisp fall air, this week’s picks have something for everyone.
Made in Ethiopia
Sponsored by BU’s African Studies Center, Center for the Study of Asia, and Global Development Policy Center, Made in Ethiopia invites audiences to explore two very different worlds. The documentary, filmed over four years, traces China’s complex influence on Africa, from the roar of new industrial zones to the fading rhythms of rural life. After the 90-minute screening, directors Xinyan Yu and Max Duncan will take questions in a live Q&A.

Our Town
Lyric Stage Boston is currently staging Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, an American classic that reminds us to find beauty in the everyday. The production is a BU homecoming of sorts, with alums John Kuntz (GRS’05) as Professor Willard and Simon Stimson and Jesse Garlick (CFA’14) portraying Howie Newsome, Joe Stoddard, and Mr. Carter/Dead Man. Performances run through October 19, with multiple showtimes this weekend.

Boston University Symphony Orchestra
Looking for your dose of culture for the week? The Boston University Symphony Orchestra takes the stage under conductor Sarah Ioannides, CFA’s director of orchestral activities, this Friday. Expect sweeping sounds, bold storytelling, and plenty of energy as the program moves from dreamy Debussy to vibrant Stravinsky, with a spirited nod to student life in between.

Sunset Walk and Picnic: Fruitlands
Leave the city behind for a fall picnic escape at the Fruitlands Museum in scenic Harvard, Mass. The best part? FitRec has you covered with round-trip transportation. Spend a relaxed Saturday taking in the crisp air, feeling the evening breeze, and watching the sky shift from sunset to dark while catching up with friends.

BU vs. LIU Men’s Ice Hockey
Your Frozen Four champions are back! The men’s ice hockey Terriers kick off the season at Agganis Arena as they take on Long Island University in the home opener. Expect big crowds, high energy, and a T-shirt giveaway to mark the first game. Catch it all Saturday night, with streaming available on ESPN+ if you can’t make it in person.

Harpoon Dogtoberfest
Calling all dog lovers: Dogtoberfest is happening at Harpoon Brewery this Sunday, and it will be a puppy paradise. Expect puppy costume contests, an adoption meet-and-greet by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and plenty of food and drinks. While anyone can attend, you’ll need to be 21+ with an ID to purchase beer.

Castle Island Day Trip
Spend your Sunday by the sea with a trip to Castle Island, a South Boston landmark known for its ocean views. You’ll walk around the waterfront, take in the salty air, and learn a little bit about the area’s maritime history. With round-trip transportation provided by FitRec, all you have to do is sign up, relax, and enjoy a mini escape without leaving the city.
