The Weekender: March 21 to 24
Check out a powerful art exhibition, catch a laugh at an improv show, and support your Terriers in the playoffs

March 21 to 24
The first day of spring was March 19, but the Boston weather must not have received the memo—we’re looking at a somewhat chilly, dreary weekend. But don’t let it get you down. We have some perfect ways to take a break from the semester’s homestretch and enjoy the start of the new season, including browsing an art gallery at the Howard Thurman Center, catching a film festival in Cambridge, and cheering on the Terriers in the Hockey East playoffs.
Boston Underground Film Festival
The annual Boston Underground Film Festival is back and coming to the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge this weekend. For over 23 years, the festival has showcased experimental and innovative films from all around the world for Boston and New England film buffs. The website boasts the festival will display “the strange, the unusual, and the overlooked,” so you won’t want to miss out. Tickets for an individual show are $15 and a weekend pass is $150.
March 20 through Sunday, March 24. Brattle Theatre, 40 Brattle St., Cambridge. Check times and buy tickets here.
Boston Ballet’s Cinderella
Everyone knows the classic tale of Cinderella—the missing shoe, pumpkin carriage, and a fairy godmother. However, you have the chance to see the fairy tale reimagined through dance with Boston Ballet’s professional performance (with costumes and sets based on the original 1948 production), which wraps up this weekend.
Through Sunday, March 24. Citizens Bank Opera House, 539 Washington St., Boston. Check times and buy tickets here.
Brush Strokes for Peace Art Exhibition
The Haitian Artists Assembly of Massachusetts is taking its traveling exhibition Brush Strokes for Peace to Comm Ave with an event at the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground on Friday. Since Massachusetts has the third-largest Haitian population in the United States, the show sets out to promote narratives about the immigrants’ desire for peace and their lives settling in new environments. Stop by to see works by 12 artists on display, participate in a Q&A, and enjoy snacks at this powerful exhibition.
Friday, March 22, 5:30 to 7:30 pm, Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground, 808 Commonwealth Ave., Boston. Register here.
BU Men’s Lacrosse vs. Army West Point
Lacrosse season is in full swing, and it doesn’t get much bigger than this: the BU men’s lacrosse team will host the No. 1 team in the nation, Army West Point, for the first time in the BU team’s history. The Terriers are off to a 5-2 start to the season and have the chance to make a big splash this weekend.
Friday, March 22, 6 pm, Nickerson Field. Tickets are free for Sports Pass holders, $5 for faculty and staff, and $8 for the general public. Buy tickets here.
Hockey East Playoffs
The BU men’s hockey team is looking to defend its 2023 Hockey East title this weekend as the 2024 playoffs kick off at TD Garden. The No. 2 Terriers will match up against the No. 7 University of Maine Black Bears on Friday in what is sure to be a battle of the titans. If the Terriers win, they will face off against either the University of Massachusetts or Boston College in the championship game on Saturday. Tickets may be hard to come by, so be on the lookout for watch parties or stream the game on NESN and ESPN+.
Friday, March 22, 7:30 pm, and Saturday, March 23, 7:30 pm, TD Garden, 100 Legends Way, Boston.
Liquid Fun Improv Show
Here’s a two-for-free special: free laughs and free pizza. On Friday night, stop by BU Central to watch Liquid Fun, BU’s improv comedy troupe, perform a free show. They will also serve pizza! Founded in 1998, Liquid Fun has provided entertainment to the BU community for over 25 years.
Friday, March 22, 8 pm, BU Central.
Battle of the Babes A Cappella Concert
BU a cappella group Chordially Yours, a group for women and nonbinary-identifying students, is hosting its annual Battle of the Babes concert on Saturday at the Photonics Center. The concert will also feature fellow BU a cappella groups Forté, Aural Fixation, and Terpsichore. Ticket proceeds will go to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund.
Saturday, March 23, 7 pm, Photonics Center, Room 206. Tickets are $3 for BU students and $5 for everyone else. RSVP here.
