Monday, February 6
Men’s Beanpot
On the first two Mondays in February, the annual Beanpot college hockey tournament draws crowds of college students, alums, and sports fans to TD Garden. Each year the iconic tourney pits Boston University, Boston College, Harvard University, and Northeastern University against one another over two rounds of head-to-head competition. On Monday, February 6, the Terriers will play in their 70th tournament, against the Northeastern Huskies, in the second game, at 8 pm. The first game, BC vs Harvard, is at 5:30 pm. Next Monday the two winners will face off at 7:30 pm.

Chinese New Year Culture Fair
The Chinese language faculty and staff from the Global House and Study Abroad are hosting a Lunar New Year celebration. There will be seven culture workshops where students can receive a blessing and a lucky card. Recipients of three lucky cards can exchange a gift from the gift table.

Tuesday, February 7
Women’s Beanpot
The BU women’s varsity ice hockey team faces off against the Northeastern Huskies in the 44th annual women’s tournament at 4 pm. The Terriers last won the Beanpot in 2019, their first and only title as a varsity program. Next week, the winner will play the victor of the BC-Harvard matchup.

The State of the Union Address
The State of the Union address, an annual speech about the current condition of the nation, will be delivered by President Joe Biden Tuesday to a joint session of the US Congress. This will be the president’s second State of the Union, and he is expected to discuss topics like the Russia-Ukraine war, debt, and social spending.

The Uses and Abuses of Jim Crow
Zine Magubane, a professor of sociology at Boston College, will discuss the impact of Jim Crow racism (laws that enforced racial segregation in the South after the Civil War through the 1960s) on the populist movement and working class.

Migration and Health Webinar
The BU School of Public Health is hosting a webinar addressing the implications of human migration on public health. Speakers include contributing authors to the anthology Migration and Health; it will be moderated by Muhammad Zaman, director of BU’s Center on Forced Displacement and a professor and vice chair of biomedical engineering and of materials science and engineering at the College of Engineering.

Love Notes Concert
The BU student-run media company Channel Sounds will perform “Love Notes: Valentine’s Day Showcase” at BU Central. There will be mocktails sponsored by Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice, a floral pop-up shop, snacks, and exclusive merch.

The Creative Writing Program Annual Faculty Reading
Among the writers and poets participating in the BU Creative Writing Program’s Annual Faculty Reading are Robert Pinsky, a William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor and a professor of English and of creative writing in the College of Arts & Sciences, director of the Creative Writing program, and three-time US poet laureate; Leslie Epstein, a professor of English in CAS; and Nicole Sealey, a visiting professor and author of the collection Ordinary Beast (Ecco, 2017), a finalist for the PEN Open Book and Hurston/Wright Legacy Awards. Stick around for a reception on the GSU Terrace Lounge after the event.

Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series
The School of Hospitality Administration’s speaker series will feature a lineup of hospitality executives discussing the future of the industry. The event will be presented by Ahmass Fakahany (Questrom’79), chair of BU’s Board of Trustees and founder and CEO of Manhattan-based Altamarea Group, whose portfolio includes 15 restaurants across the globe.

IDEA Con
Innovate@BU is hosting an idea conference to bring together young entrepreneurs to network and inspire one another. The event features an array of speakers and workshops.

Sunday, February 12
Seventh Annual Winter Walk
New England experienced some of its coldest weather in decades this past weekend, making this event all the more timely. The Winter Walk aims to raise funds for and awareness about the plight of Boston’s homeless population. The two-mile walk weaves through Boston’s streets during the coldest month of the year, and then participants share a meal together to hear stories from Boston’s homeless population.

Forget about the football! Rihanna is performing at halftime of Super Bowl LVII. But if you’re interested in the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, kickoff is at 6:30 pm.
