Terriers in Charge: Tabitha Fortner (CAS’24)
President, FeelGood BU, aka “the grilled cheese club”
Starting at 10:30 every Tuesday night, Tabitha Fortner (CAS’24) can be found in West Dining Hall assembling grilled cheese sandwiches. The psychology and economics double major is president of FeelGood BU, aka “the grilled cheese club,” which sells a variety of grilled cheese sandwiches each week. All proceeds are donated to The Hunger Project, a global nonprofit that works to end hunger and poverty.
“FeelGood appeals to so many different types of people.” Fortner says. “People who are passionate about sustainability. People who are interested in human rights. People who are interested in community service. People who like food. People who live in dorms and aren’t able to cook their own food.”
BU’s FeelGood chapter is part of a national organization that has raised $2 million since its inception in 2005, according to its website. The BU group previously operated out of Warren Towers for more than a decade, moving to West Campus last semester.
Looking to get involved on campus after transferring to BU for her sophomore year and continue her passion for community service, Fortner joined FeelGood in fall 2021. “Coming to my first Splash and seeing someone dressed in a grilled cheese costume caught me off guard, but in a good way.” she recalls. As president, it is Fortner’s job to arrive early on Tuesdays to set up the grilled cheese station with bread, cheese, toppings, and other ingredients and then lead a four-person team through the two-and-a-half-hour shift. “It’s so lively at night,” she says. “It’s such a community.”
Want to get involved? FeelGood is looking for new members this semester. “It’s a really chill, laid-back kind of thing,” Fortner says. “You can come once and that’s fine. If you don’t want to cook, you can come to our meetings. There’s something for everyone.”
