50 Great Photos Capture the Joy, Drama of BU’s 150th Commencement
There was passion and there were protests, and BU Today photographers were there to capture the emotion of the historic day
How do you photograph a Commencement ceremony that includes more than 4,100 graduates, and 20,000 guests, faculty and honorary degree recipients? It takes a village—or in the case of Boston University’s 150th Commencement, May 21—a phalanx of photographers who, by end of day, had snapped more than 12,000 images documenting the official send-off for the Class of 2023.
BU staff photojournalists Cydney Scott and Jackie Ricciardi and associate creative director of photography Janice Checchio and a team of six freelance photographers roamed Nickerson Field throughout the two-hour ceremony. We’ve pulled together 50 photos that best capture the emotion of the day, including protests on and off the field (and in the sky) directed at Commencement speaker David Zaslav (LAW’85), CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, whose presence during the ongoing Hollywood writers strike stirred controversy.
