Name: Casey Evans (COM’21)
Address: A quad in StuVi II. Evans has lived in the building since sophomore year, but on different floors, with different views. This year she lucked out: her suite boasts an amazing view of the Charles River and the Boston skyline.
Short bio: The film and TV major spends a lot of time behind the camera—she films games for BU Athletics, interned this past summer at Viper Studios, an event production company on Long Island, where she’s from (she says she felt pretty lucky to secure an internship during the pandemic), and runs a popular YouTube channel.
Racking up those YouTube views: Known as Casey Evs to her 8,000 subscribers, Evans started her YouTube channel back in high school to document her frequent travels with her family (her dad worked for British Airways and one of the perks was discounted trips).
Now seven years later, Evans has created dozens of videos, with the most popular—her 2019 move-in costarring her mom—earning more than 713,000 views. Other videos feature her parents, her abridged Study Abroad trip to Australia before the pandemic forced her home last March, and a day-in-the-life during an average weekend at BU. She even stores a ring light in her room to provide flattering light as she films.
An eye for design: Evans hasn’t held any internships or jobs in the fashion realm, but says she’s always “had a knack for it.” She browses thrift stores often and collects little pieces that she pulls together in arresting combinations.
Where she finds her decorating inspiration: Pinterest. “This summer in quarantine I started planning out my room because I had very little else to do,” she says with a laugh.
Room design philosophy: “In previous years, I went a little over the top,” Evans confesses. “This year, I was thinking more natural—less is more. In my bed area, I kept to mostly whites. And then elsewhere I’ve done green pops and some plants.”
Favorite places to shop: TJ Maxx, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and thrift stores.
How much did all of this cost? Not a whole lot. Her bedspread was reimagined and resewn by her mom after it was stained; other pieces like the mirror and plants were $10 finds on Amazon.
A popular trend she shamelessly follows: Evans says she really likes plants (even her fake hanging vines) because they add a nice natural touch and bring nature indoors. Since her StuVi II windows don’t open, she appreciates how live plants help cycle air.
Random tip for those looking to decorate their rooms on a budget: Thrift whenever possible, says Evans, who even has a YouTube video listing her favorite local stores (like Goodwill, the Garment District, and Buffalo Exchange). Hunting through them, she’s found Prada boots, a brand-new blender, original artwork, and designer bags. She also buys items for DIY tye-dye and bleach projects.
In “Decked-Out Dorms,” students show off their stylish and unique dorm rooms and apartments, dish on where they found their bedding and decor, and talk about the trinkets that remind them of home. Is your room worth sharing? Email firstname.lastname@example.org.
