Why should I go? Donnell Gilchrist, a Tampa, Fla., native currently attending Berklee College of Music, plays jazz piano in addition to producing hip-hop beats. Earlier this year, in a collaboration with producer KRS, Gilchrist produced BRAINIAK, a freestyle by St. Louis–based rapper-singer Smino.
Gilchrist blends a mix of electronic, gospel, and jazz music into his instrumentals to create a unique, sought-after sound in the hip-hop beat-making landscape. He primarily makes hip-hop beats built off of samples from vinyl records, preferring vocal samples that sound like they come from Motown or jazz artists. If you’re curious, listen to his Soundcloud page.
The Berklee Summer in the City concert series gives the college’s students, alumni, and faculty a chance to showcase their talent and work throughout Boston. The concerts run through October at venues like the Boston Public Library, the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, and the Boston Harbor Islands. Find a full list of shows here.
Take the Green Line to Park Street.
