Looking for a movie the whole family can enjoy for free tonight? Grab a blanket and some bug spray and head over to Town Field in Dorchester for a screening of the comedy The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature, the 2017 sequel to the 2014 animated hit film The Nut Job that starred an intrepid squirrel named Surly, voiced by Will Arnett. Tonight’s screening kicks off Mayor Walsh’s Summer Movie Nights 2018, the annual series of free movie screenings taking place in public parks throughout Boston through September 21.
In The Nut Job 2, Surly and his gang of woodland creatures are back. This time, the gang (once again featuring the voices of Arnett, Maya Rudolph, Bobby Moynihan, and Katherine Heigl, among others) discover that their home, Liberty Park, is threatened by the corrupt mayor of Oakton who wants to turn it into an amusement park. Surly and company team up with a deceivingly cute, kung fu–wielding mouse (Jackie Chan) to reclaim the park and save their home.
This year marks the 12th season for the movie series, which began under Mayor Walsh’s predecessor, Thomas Menino (Hon.’01). Find a complete list of this year’s films and locations (in addition to Dorchester, neighborhoods include Roslindale, Charlestown, South Boston, Roxbury, Allston-Brighton, Mattapan, East Boston, and Hyde Park) here. The series concludes with showings of this year’s hit film Black Panther on September 7 and Karate Kid on September 21, both at the Boston Common Frog Pond.
The movie series is sponsored by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department and Northeastern University, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment and local radio station Hot 96.9. All screenings are free and open to the public and begin at dusk.
The Nut Job 2 screens tonight, Thursday, August 2, at Town Field, 1565 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, starting at dusk (approximately 8 pm). Via public transportation, take an MBTA Red Line train to Fields Corner and walk five minutes toward Dorchester Avenue. The park is located at the corner of Dorchester Avenue and Park Street.
