West Campus UBurger Is Gone—Where to Go for a Great Burger?

Much to the disappointment of hungry BU students, the UBurger in West Campus closed earlier this month. The good news is there are still plenty of great burger joints near campus. We’ve put together a list of five places you’ll want to check out that offer great food at great prices. And for those who feel that only a UBurger will do, take heart: the UBurger in Kenmore Square, 636 Beacon St., remains open for business.

Wahlburgers

It doesn’t get more Boston than Wahlburgers. This popular chain is owned and operated by J. Paul Wahlberg (in partnership with his more famous brothers, actors and Dorchester natives Donnie and Mark). At the Kenmore location, you can enjoy delicious Angus beef burgers made with a proprietary blend of brisket, short rib, and chuck meat. Be sure to try one of the specialty burgers: the Thanksgiving Turkey Burger, with stuffing, mayonnaise, orange-cranberry sauce, and butternut squash, is just right for those who can’t wait for Thanksgiving to get their turkey fix.

Wahlburgers, 132 Brookline Ave., Boston, is open Sunday through Thursday, 11 am to 11 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 11 am to midnight.

Tasty Burger

This burger joint proudly boasts that it’s the official burger of the Boston Red Sox. One bite and you’ll see why. The burgers are mouth-watering and the prices ($4.95 to $6.45) can’t be beat. The Big Tasty is a popular crowd-pleaser, loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and sauce. If you’re feeling a bit more daring, try the Spicy Jalapeño burger with pepper jack cheese and roasted jalapeños. The fries and onion rings are pretty good, too.

Tasty Burger, 1301 Boylston St., Boston, is open daily from 11 am to 2 am. 

Five Guys Burgers & Fries

Five Guys Burgers & Fries is an Allston staple: it’s not unusual to see lines out the door on weekend nights. The chain uses only fresh ground beef and peanut oil at all locations, and doesn’t use any frozen ingredients. The burger options are simple: you can order a plain hamburger or cheeseburger, or indulge by adding bacon. You can also order the burgers in “little” sizes for those worried about their waistline. Toppings are free and you can choose as many as you like. The vanilla milkshakes alone are worth the trip and free mix-ins include bananas, cherries, coffee, peanut butter, and more.

Shake Shack

Shake Shack’s savory, all-natural Angus beef burgers are considerably higher-end than you’ll find at a lot of burger restaurants. The classic ShackBurger comes with lettuce, tomato, and the chain’s famous ShackSauce. There are only five burger options, but each is delicious and well worth the journey to Newbury Street (you’ll find them in Harvard Square, the Seaport District, and Chestnut Hill, too). The burgers are made from 100 percent Angus beef that’s been vegetarian fed and humanely raised: no hormones or antibiotics. As its name implies, the chain’s shakes are as good as their burgers: you can order traditional flavors like vanilla and chocolate or more adventurous flavors like caramel and peanut butter.

Boston Burger Company

Burger fanatics far and wide head to Boston Burger Company knowing they’ll find a great meal and an Instagram-worthy picture. The menu is expansive, featuring more than two dozen entrées, including unique options like the Mac Attack, a burger topped with mac & cheese and bacon that’s so good it was featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. All burgers come with homemade potato chips and a choice of baked beans or coleslaw. The outrageously over-the-top milkshakes, dubbed “Freak Frappes” (you’ll understand when you see them—some come topped with full slices of cake) are a must-try. That is, if you have any room left after your meal.
