Founded in 1936 as a sister site to the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA), formerly the Boston Museum of Modern Art, boasts an impressive collection of modern art as well as a constantly changing slate of special exhibitions. And tonight—and every Thursday night—admission is free from 5 to 9 p.m., courtesy of its Free Thursday Nights.
Visitors can see works by Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois, and Mona Hatoum in the museum’s permanent collection and three current shows on view for the summer. Nari Ward: Sun Splashed is the largest survey to date of the Jamaica-born artist’s work: sculpture, photography, video, and performance. Ward draws inspiration from African American history and culture as well as from his native Jamaica, using found items and unlikely materials to address power and politics in contemporary society.
Gillian Wearing introduces the celebrated British photographer’s work to Bostonians. Her images focus on the nuances of identity, and this show includes her site-specific commission Rock ’n’ Roll 70 (2015), a monumental installation comprising images crafted by fellow artists using age-progressing technology that interprets what Wearing might look like at age 70.
Catch British filmmaker and Academy Award-winning director Steve McQueen’s video installation Ashes (2002-2015), which shows footage of a fisherman on two opposite sides of a screen: one side shows a film, shot on Super 8 film, depicting a young fisherman named Ashes enjoying a carefree day out on the water; the other side portrays his surprising fate. The two films share a common soundtrack.
ICA Free Thursday Nights will also bring back HarborWalk Sounds, live outdoor concerts from 6 to 8:30 p.m. during July and August, courtesy of Berklee College of Music. Find more information about the series here.
ICA Free Thursday Nights are from 5 to 9 p.m. each week at the ICA, 25 Harbor Shore Drive, Boston. Find more information about hours and directions here, email to info@icaboston.org, or call 617-478-3100.
