BU community members in the Bay State Road–Beacon Street area are being asked to shelter in place as authorities investigate a leaking package in a Federal Express delivery truck parked on Beacon Street, just west of Bay State Road, late Tuesday afternoon. At 5:22 p.m., the Boston Fire Department tweeted that the truck held a box that was leaking what the the department has confirmed was hydrochloric acid. The box was marked “Corrosives” and was found to be smoking. The department says a Level 3 hazmat response was initiated “as a precaution.” There were no injuries reported.
The BU Alert system sent calls and emails beginning at 4:45 p.m. Students living in Myles Standish Hall are able to access the building, but are asked to use the rear entrance on Bay State Road.
Heavy traffic congestion is reported. Boston Police and Fire Department have closed several blocks around the area and are rerouting pedestrians and vehicles.
