Boston is set to come alive with the sound of music this summer as the Berklee College of Music’s Summer in the City series returns for another season of free outdoor concerts by students, alumni, and faculty from the music school. The concerts, running through September, take place at venues in Boston, including the central branch of the Boston Public Library in Copley Square, the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, and Georges Island; in Cambridge, at Kendall Square and Club Passim; and in some of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods, among them Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, and East Boston.
Berklee alum and native of Italy Nikko Ielasi performs today at noon at Boston Common’s Brewer Plaza.
Ielasi graduated from Berklee last year with a degree in piano performance and contemporary writing and producing and is pursuing a career in musical composition. An experienced composer, he has already collaborated with well-known artists, including Aloe Blacc, Bilal, and Chris Turner, among others. With a musical style that spans traditional jazz, neo soul, and R&B, Ielasi’s signature sound is unique.
The Summer in the City series brings performances by artists from around the globe, giving the concerts a decidedly international feel. In addition to Ielasi, among other artists performing this week are Costa Rican musician Orlando Retana, Portuguese pianist Mariana Secca, and Venezuelan singer-songwriter Rodolfo Arteaga.
The series culminates on September 24 with the 2016 Berklee Beantown Jazz Festival on Columbus Avenue.
Nikko Ielasi performs today and every day this week at noon at Brewer Plaza on the Boston Common. Admission is free. Take any MBTA Green Line trolley to Park Street.
