Football Heads to Fenway
Scottish and Portuguese clubs compete tonight
That newfound international soccer addiction doesn’t have to end with the World Cup. Grab a vuvuzela and head down to Fenway Park tonight at 8 for a matchup between the Celtic Football Club and Sporting Clube de Portugal.
Together, the two soccer clubs have amassed 60 league championships and 49 national cup victories. Established in 1888 and based in Glasgow, Scotland, Celtic was the first United Kingdom club to win the European Cup in 1967. And Sporting has become one of the top three clubs in Portugal since it was founded in 1906.
Tonight’s soccer match will be only the 19th played on the Red Sox’s historic field and the first held at the park in 42 years. Brazilian star Pelé played in that last competition, held on July 9, 1968.
Tickets range from $20 for standing room only to $120 for the midfield line or box seats. Fenway Park is located at 4 Yawkey Way, Boston, and is accessible via the Kenmore and Fenway stops along the MBTA Green Line. Paid parking is available in surrounding lots.
