  1. I am a BU graduate and saw your post. Once again it triggered my interest in peace corp service after I retire from my career in clincial social worker. My question. Are there many older volunteered and is there a need for clinical social work, my area of expertise? Thank you. Janet

  2. Hi Janet,
There definitely are older volunteers. In fact, we had a retired math teacher in our Guinea group. She finished the two years and, from what I gather, had a great time. The Peace Corps is actually heavily recruiting volunteers who have developed skills in certain fields – i.e. HIV/AIDS, small business development and sustainability. As to social work, I’m not sure. However, if you’re flexible, they are willing to train anyone for any chore that might peak your interest.
    Best of luck – Leslie

  3. Nice article! As a former PCV who never left Africa, and a BU employee, I really enjoyed reading the article and am glad it was the headliner for today’s BU Today.

I’m the resident director of BU’s study abroad program in Africa.  As you can, perhaps, imagine, interest in and curiosity about the Peace Corps is one of the reasons students choose to study in Niger.  And a number ofBU/Niger alums join the PC.

I myself was a PCV in Senegal and visited Conakry 3 times when a friend of mine was the PCD in Guinee.

Two of my closest friends on the BU/Boston faculty were also PCVs.

So thank you for writing the article.

  4. Hi Janet!

Thank you for your questions about the Peace Corps. My name is Stacey Ferguson and I am the recruiter for Boston University and I would be happy to connect with you and talk more about our volunteer opportunities for retired professionals.

To answer the second part of your question, yes, there are opportunities within the Peace Corps for individuals with experience and education in the field of social work.

If you or anyone has more questions about the Peace Corps – Please feel free to connect with me via phone: 617-565-5548 or via email: sferguson2@peacecorps.gov

    Thanks so much!
