There are 8 comments on The Lady with the Ruler

  1. I have to say that, more than “the ruler lady”, Martha Khan is an institution herself, a bedrock for us graduate students at CAS. She is incredibly resourceful, invariably helpful, and – not least – always in good spirits, cheering everyone up, while we deal with our mistakes or setbacks! BU is very very lucky to have her! On behalf of all of us, Martha, thank you very much!

  2. Even before we (phd candidates) meet with Mrs. Kahn we have an anxiety provoking image; the rumors of a crazy ruler lady are historical. However, those rumors are nowhere near the truth. Mrs. Kahn is the most patient and caring gatekeeper I have ever met. She is definitely on a student’s side. In fact, she goes way beyond the call of duty. For example, on April 17, the last day to hand in GRS dissertations, she stayed well beyond 5 p.m. to collect dissertations from students, me included. What a BU gem!

  3. Martha is the best. When I was a new administrator at BU, many moons ago, she sat down with me during the winter and walked me through the whole dissertation process so I would be able to advise my graduate students. Even during the April rush, she was always available to answer my questions about GRS.

  4. I can’t wait to meet Mrs. Kahn! I’m only at the beginning of writing the dissertation, but I’m very much looking forward to putting the finishing touches on my magnum opus.

  5. This is actually the first time I have ever posted a comment on any website but I was inspired today because for over four decades Martha Kahn has symbolized all that is the best about Boston University or any educational institution, for that matter. Caring and instructive, uber-competent yet understanding and most impressive of all — her ruler is flexible but still manages to be unfailingly precise.

  6. Martha does a great job.

Unfortunately, the company that BU hires to make hard cover copies of our dissertations seems to have very low standards.
In my dissertation I have many pictures with a lot of colors that were printed in black and white with a very low definition that not even allows me to recognize them.

I have seen much better dissertations in book format from other universities around the world. I wonder if BU can hire someone else to do this job.

    Thanks,

    Sebastian

  7. Martha somehow maintains the perfect combination of warmth and professionalism, supportiveness and strictness, seriousness to the task and humor about the minutiae of it all. She is a real BU gem. Let the ruler lady rule!

  8. Words are not adequate to describe Martha Wellman Khan or the tremendous role she plays at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. She is caring, helpful, and professional all the time. Her motherly personality is mixed with firmness and compassion and undergirded with knowledge and experience. If you follow her lead, she will navigate you through the persnickety Ph.D. process. Thank you, Martha, for everything!
